(04) Memorial speech / Mak Hoi Wah, vice-chairman of Hong Kong Alliance

Eulogy of the candlelight vigil of the 26th anniversary of June 4

To the martyrs who died in the 1989 Democracy Movement:

May your spirits return to us, return to Victoria Park, where tens of thousands have gathered every year for the past 26 years. Let us mourn your sacrifice for democracy with candlelight, tears and passion.

Your deaths have never been explained or even acknowledged. Your families are not even allowed to openly mourn for you. Tiananmen Mothers have endured much persecution to confirm 202 fatalities, compiling a list of victims, in the hope that the injustice will be redressed.

You were met with tanks and machine guns when you protested against official corruption and demanded democracy and truth. Your voices were silenced. In China, it is as if June 4 never happened. No trace of it can be found, not even on the Internet. Activists across China are arrested by the Ministry of State Security. Public memorial gatherings are banned. Even mourning in private is investigated. This only shows that the government has a guilty conscience, reflecting its cowardice and anxiety in the face of your humble, courageous criticism.

For the past 26 years, Hong Kong citizens, mainlanders and friends from foreign countries have gathered here at the June 4 Candlelight Vigil to mourn you, hoping that the day of your vindication will soon come. Each of us lights a candle here, making a bright sea of candlelight, in contrast to the darkness in China.

Many countries have their own histories of oppression and massacre: To name but a few, the crimes against the Gwangju Democracy Movement of South Korea, the February 28 Incident in Taiwan, and the massacres of the apartheid regime in South Africa. Those injustices were eventually redressed because citizens tenaciously sought accountability and an end to impunity. In order to rebuild the faith of the people, we will continue to demand that the PRC form an independent committee to investigate the truth of June 4 and publish an account, that it bring those responsible for the massacre to justice, and that it compensate the families of the victims.

We hope you are here with us and can hear our mourning and our hopes for our country and our people. May democracy, freedom, human rights and rule of law soon come to China. The road is rough, winding and long. We will pursue our goals with infinite perseverance and fight till the end. May you hear us in heaven and rest in peace.

(06) Video/Tiananmen Mothers - Zhang Yanqiu, wife of June 4 victim Wang Zhiying

Dear compatriots and friends in Hong Kong,

I am a member of Tiananmen Mothers, and I am speaking today on behalf of the families of June 4 victims.

My name is Zhang Yanqiu, and I am 59. My husband, Wang Zhiying died in the June 4 massacre in 1989. On Zhoushikou Street, a bullet hit his neck, piercing the carotid artery, and went through his heart. He died in my arms there without any last words. After all these years, I can still recall the scene vividly in my mind.

Around 10 pm, my husband and I left my parents, whom we' d been visiting, and headed home. The streets were crowded along the way. At around 1 am, we encountered martial law troops marching to Tiananmen Square. My husband was shot, and he fell quietly in my arms. I embraced him while blood flowed from his back. I covered his bleeding wounds with my hands but a stream of blood suddenly burst out from his neck. His blood flowed over his white vest as well as my hands and my clothes.  "Help, please help us, "  I shouted. But my cries were drowned out by the fierce gunfire. After some time, the troops passed and people finally heard my cries.

They carried my husband on a flatbed tricycle and brought him to nearby Qianmen Hospital. The doctors said there was nothing they could do. So people intercepted a minivan and brought him to Tongren Hospital. When I was later brought to the hospital by two young cyclists, my husband had already been sent to the morgue.

I knelt in front of the doctor, holding his legs with tears.  "Please save him. I beg you. He has a seven-year-old daughter. Our family cannot do without him!" The doctor replied with tears, "We tried, but he had died before he arrived. He was the first deceased person at our hospital."

My innocent husband was killed on the streets, and I do not feel calm in my heart. So I joined Tiananmen Mothers to seek justice for the deaths of our loved ones.

Through 26 years, we have presented our demands for truth, accountability and reparation. Although we have faced persecution and surveillance during these 26 years, we are not discouraged. We firmly believe that we have the right to seek justice and recover human dignity for each of the innocent victims killed in 1989.

At the National People's Congress press conference in March this year, Premier Li Keqiang said,  "Leaders of a country, while inheriting the historical achievements of their predecessors, also need to shoulder the historical responsibilities for crimes committed by past generations. "  We are keen to know whether the current leaders have the courage and responsibility to address the tragic massacre in 1989.

Compatriots and friends in Hong Kong, thank you for your continuing support of Tiananmen Mothers. Your actions have given us great encouragement. Every year, the candlelight in Victoria Park soothes our pain and inspires us to go on. Our hearts are linked together: we will not forget June 4. We will seek justice and demand a fair and impartial resolution of the June 4 tragedy.

Once again, thank you very much.

(08) Video message from Wang Chaohua, a participant in the 1989 Democracy Movement

Dear compatriots in Hong Kong,

I am very fortunate to have this opportunity to be with you on this memorable day to remember the victims of June 4; to remember those who struggled and fought together in Tiananmen Square for democracy in China; and to pay tribute to the citizens of Beijing who rushed to rescue the injured and stood up against the army and government repression.

On this commemorative occasion, I also remember the Hong Kong Umbrella Movement. The people of Hong Kong have always been supportive of the democratic movement in mainland China, and they have also been striving for their own democratic rights. Over the past 26 years, I have noticed an increasing number of young participants at June 4 commemorative events. They are very similar to the young faces I have seen in the Umbrella Movement. Many of them had not yet even been born in 1989. But they have followed in the footsteps of preceding generations of China' s democracy movement and have come to realize why we cannot accept that our society is governed by repression and why we should continue to assert our democratic and political rights. These young people learned their first lessons in democracy and politics in June 4 commemorative activities over the past two decades. I believe this is why they have acted so courageously and assertively in the Umbrella Movement for genuine universal suffrage. In this sense, I believe that the democracy movements in mainland China and Hong Kong are inextricably connected. Between Tiananmen Square and  "Citizens' Square "  in Hong Kong, there is a connection.

During the protests in Hong Kong last year, I saw many young people studying under the scorching sun and pouring rain. They read in tents and did their homework at desks in makeshift classrooms on the eight-lane dual carriageway occupied by demonstrators. The scene brought back memories of the Tiananmen Square protests. Many of our young students were like yours. They insisted on studying in between protests. At that time, we did not have electronic devices. I remember many students sitting in tents listening to English-language broadcasts from Hong Kong. They repeated the sentences and learned vocabulary. They imagined a beautiful vision of a democratic China. They believed their own futures were linked to China' s democratic progress. They believed their futures were linked to a brighter future of democracy in China.

But the Chinese Communist Party did not think so. It sent troops, tanks and machine guns to attack the people. It destroyed the beautiful vision, and this is the root of the great divide today between the ruling class and the people in China. In Hong Kong, we are still able to continue to imagine such a vision. This is the reason why we support the movement for genuine universal suffrage in Hong Kong and support those in Hong Kong who continue to commemorate the people who died in the Tiananmen Square crackdown.

I stand with you in remembering the June 4 victims; in demanding an end to one-party rule and the return of the power of government to the hands of the people. Let' s fight together for the future of democracy in China and for the future of democracy in Hong Kong.

Thank you.

(11) Introducing mainland Chinese arrested for supporting the " Umbrella Movement"  in Hong Kong /the families of Wang Zang & Zhui Hun

Statements by family members of Wang Cang and Zhui Hun, mainlanders arrested for supporting the Hong Kong Umbrella Movement

Wang Yixing, wife of Wang Cang

I am Wang Yixing, the wife of poet Wang Cang. First of all, thank you for your concern about Wang Cang. It has been more than seven months since Wang Cang was arrested on the evening of 1 October 2014 for supporting the Hong Kong demonstrations. Since then, all of our communications have been put under surveillance. Police searched our home on 2 October. My child and I were taken to the police station on 8 October and were detained illegally for more than 10 hours. On October 16, we were pressured by our landlord, She Guobao and forced to move out. My child and I had nowhere to live and no food to eat. I sincerely appreciate the help we received from many friends who provided temporary shelter. Later, we found another place to live. But the police followed me. I live in fear every day, frightened by the sound of footsteps and a knock on the door.

Two months after his arrest, Wang Cang was allowed to see a lawyer, and we discovered that he had been tortured during his detention. I saved money for him every month but his account number kept changing, from 116 to 118 and then to 119. It is now 117. Our daughter was less than two years old when he was arrested. She is now two and a half. She always talks about her father, and she misses him a lot. I hope she can see her father before she turns three. I hope her dad can return home by her third birthday.

I want to take this opportunity to thank our online friends from all over the country. My daughter and I sincerely thank everyone for all of your support, concern and help.

Wife of Zhui Hun (Excerpt)

Father of our child, is everything fine? You have already been away from us for more than six months. Summer will soon arrive, and I will prepare some clothes for you when the season changes.

"Little Freedom "  is now able to run around and say things like baba, mama, big sister, baobao, kitty cat. He can climb onto the small bench and stand up by himself.

He was just ten months old and could do nothing when you were taken away from home. He would say,  "Baba, baba. "  And I told him,  "Baba is not at home. Baba loves you, and baba loves freedom. Soon, baba will come back to hug and kiss you. "  I told him that regardless of whether he understood or not. I believe he will understand and know that you exist.

Guinu was hurt the most by your arrest. I could tell from the nightmare she told me about having. In her dream, her father and some friends were having dumplings at your studio. Suddenly, a large number of police officers dug a hole, barged into the house and took all of you away.  Then she woke up. The nightmare replays the raid on our home that evening. I hope time can slowly heal her wounds.

Father of our child, you are an artist. Every artist has a collection. No matter what happens in the future, you will be the treasure of my life and I will be your biggest collector. The path to fairness, justice and freedom is too long. Your child and I are waiting for you to come home.

A lawyer friend told me that you created a piece of performance art at the detention center called  "Banguo "  ( "half a fruit "  or  "half-wrapped " ). At first, I did not understand the meaning of  "Banguo "  and wondered what you wanted to express.  After a month or two, several possibilities occurred to me.  "Ban "  (half) means cutting through the center and I guess it refers to  "Occupy Central " .  "Guo "  (wrap) may refer to the loss of freedom. Together, it seems that you want to say, regardless of what allegations the authorities make against you, the loss of your freedom is because of the Hong Kong Occupy movement. It is so unlike you to beat around the bush like that and I am not sure if I have understood it correctly.  "Banguo "  can also mean halfway to the outcome. Are you saying that we only see half of the results when we are in the middle of a process and that we cannot give up when things have not come to a full end?

(15) Manifesto of Hong Kong Alliance/ Alliance Chair Albert Ho Chun Yan & Standing Committee Member Timothy Lee Ho Yin

Declaration of the candlelight vigil of the 26th anniversary of June 4

26 years ago, a group of students with the innocent hearts of children expressed their dream of democracy and denounced official corruption in Tiananmen Square. But their demands were met by the army' s massacre, shocking the world and bringing down the wrath of god and humanity.

Tonight we gather and light our candles in Victoria Park again. May each candle become a heartfelt promise that we will not forget June 4 and a dedication to insistence on the truth.

26 years later, China has made great economic progress. However, the price it pays is high, including increasing collusion between government and business, suppression of human rights, and monopolization of resources by a privileged class. Since Xi Jinping came to power, not only has there been no improvement in freedom and democracy, the situation has actually deteriorated. Civil rights activists are persecuted, under surveillance, imprisoned, disappeared. Freedom of the press has become even more tightly circumscribed. The China Dream of Xi Jinping is the nightmare of the Chinese people.

It has been 26 years since the 1989 Democratic Movement. The increasing conflict between the Communist Party and Hong Kong has lead to Hong Kong people identifying less and less with China. As the years pass, the situation in Hong Kong may affect the attitude of young people towards the June 4 massacre. And yet, as we face the dictatorship of the Communist Party, diminishing press freedom, persecution of dissidents and democracy activists, enormous corruption, and the attempt to suppress democracy in Hong Kong, the candlelight reawakens our conscience from deep within. It sparks our courage to face the worst. We need to say goodbye to cynicism, to refuse to accept  "fate "  or  "the way things are "  and say no to totalitarianism.

The increase in the power of the people is encouraging. Despite continuous attack and persecution, people have not only refused to give up but continue to fight in the spirit of  ' if not us, then who?'  June 4 has not yet been vindicated. On the mainland, the term  ' June 4'  is so sensitive that mere discussion or mourning could lead to imprisonment. Civil rights activist Chen Yunfei, former student movement leader Yu Shiwen and Beijing civil rights lawyer Pu Zhiqiang have all been arrested for participating in events commemorating June 4. Today, we stand in solidarity with the people living under the Communist Party' s tyranny, letting them know they are not alone, and we encourage the movement for democracy in China. We also salute the martyrs who sacrificed themselves in the June 4 massacre. Due to their sacrifice, we were able to see the dark side of the Communist Party, which has recently shown itself clearly in Hong Kong. Under the pretext of  "national security " , the National People' s Congress Standing Committee decision of August 31 denied genuine universal suffrage to the people of Hong Kong. We will stand in the front line of resistance and fight for genuine universal suffrage as we continue to support the democratic movements in China. People on the mainland and in Hong Kong face the same totalitarian regime.  We must stick together in our fight for freedom and democracy. We believe that the egg will win in the fight with the high, solid wall.

Let us raise our candles and pay our respects to those who sacrificed themselves for democracy. Let us inherit the spirit of the 1989 Democracy Movement and reject lies, reject hypocrisy, reject injustice until democracy triumphs.

Release All Civil Rights Activists! Vindicate the 1989 Democratic Movement! Call for Accountability for the June 4 Massacre! End Totalitarianism! Build a Democratic China!

Vindicate the 1989 Democratic Movement! Release All Civil Rights Activists!
